First beta week folks so plenty of time to change so don't write it off yet. In Archeage labor points = gold. Most everything your toon does takes LP such as opening a loot bag, harvesting crops, processing materials, running trade routes all take varying amounts of LP. It is also account wide, all toons share the same pool. Currently two issues going on with LP 1. it regens slow, I mean like mud. Now for subscribers who pay a sub each month when you are online 10 every 5 minutes and when offline 5 every five minutes'. If you kept a toon logged in 24 hours straight you get 2880 and if offline for 24 hours you would get 1440. Free to players have it a whole lot rougher 5 every 5 online and 0 offline. Actually I can live with this part because the game play is so fricking wild but 2. They have fucking LP pots for sale in the cash shop. 1000 LP on a 12 hour timer. The player with deep pockets gets that extra 2000 LP every day even though I am spending 15 bucks a month same as him. Pisses me right off it does. Game itself is awesome though. Last night our guild contributed resources and built a clipper to make trade runs to the enemy continent. Was a blast, on the run I went on we fought off several attacks from NPC's during the crossing then had 2 PvP clippers from a pirate guild attack us and we won the fight due to the fact we kick ass, plus we had them outnumbered but wrf they started it Best damn naval PvP I have ever engaged in and this was just with 3 tier 1 ships. I am looking forward to manning a cannon on one of the big galleons. More PvP goodness when we made it to the enemy held town. Had a second run later with similar results but I was not on that one. All in all the guild turned in more than 20 trade packs with not a single lost trade pack. Good times indeed however if these LP pots are in the cash shop at release I won't play it long. I would gladly pay 25 a month sub, just give me a level playing field. Hoping Trion will pull it's head out of it's ass before launch

Pay to win is a blight on the game industry. I keep hoping it is a passing fad, but as long as people keep voting for it with their wallets, it will likely stick around far longer than it should.
I certainly don't even bother with any P2W games, even playing for free, since simply my being present as a warm body supports the game.

I agree Pharcellus
I payed the 150 for the founders pack back when Trion was assuring everyone no game altering items would be in cash shop. If it releases like this I will play my 3 months that came with that package and say adios if I even last that long. Shame too because core game is superb other than a less than ideal UI and some other minor things.
I am raising pure hell on the official beta forums and other game related forums over this.I hope I can get the devs to pay attention. I would gladly pay a 25 dollar or 30 dollar a month subscription if the cash shop went away. That is how much I enjoy the overall game

$25 to $30 a month is a bit pricey to me, but if you love the game that much..
That's ridiculous to pay that much for a "Founders Pack", and they still have a cash shop with that kind of functionality being sold in it.
I think they're going off the deep end of the profiteering pool. Seems to be a common theme nowadays (I'm looking at you, ESO).

seriously Phar other than the interface looks like something from 2004 this game is a 9.75 out of 10 for me. I see parts of the offline elder scrolls here, DAoC, SWG original and few other things I never have seen in any game. Good non instanced housing, PvP that includes 1 on 1 arenas, 5 vs 5 teams, and parts of the map where it varies from open PvP to safe periods. Got castle sieges, and even aerial combat with hang gliders. Got naval battles ranging from 2 guys in a rowboat to galleons with cannons. hell there are even submarines but that would take a lot of playing to get to.
hell I would probably pay 30 a month if they change the cash shop to a GW2 model. Only thing I have seen I can't do is make a toon with a friar tuck hair cut. Then if I could locate a monk robe I would sit here laughing my ass of while he did trade routes on his white donkey
That isn't saying the game is a one size fits all. For people that like scripted raids and big dungeons and interesting quests will probably hate this game. Quests are so so, dungeons are 15 - 20 minute dungeons, I think there may be a raid but not sure really. Game is pretty much centered around character development and various flavors of PvP. I have been doing it EvE + farmville style today. Spent most of the day farming chickens, lumbering and mining while playing AH roulette. Want to build my thatched farmhouse and make some gold in the process. And yes I used those fucking cash shop for potions. As a Alpha tester they gave me 14K to test the game with. Will get another 14K when the game releases
Game witout cash shop in Alpha is pretty awesome for someone looking more for a old school online RPG and not another Wow

I would bet that the decision to make it P2W was a top-down one, not something that the regular designers came up with. More than likely the executive producers or someone higher up mandated it. That type of person is almost always driven by the bottom-line dollar more than anything else.

Game was developed in Korea by XL games but what is in the cash shop is strictly Trion's idea. Forums are smoking over this along with LP regen rate and subscriber vs free to play arguments. Just a guess here but when you log in a toon in beta you get a message saying that your foiunder status expires on Aug 16 so my guess is that will be the release date plus or minus a day or so. The cash shop only came into testing last Thursday so there is time for changes. We wil,l see what happens, I my self am hoping for the best but expecting the worst. This would be a great game minus the cash shop and moochers doing the free to play

Get used to it, this is the way that most games are moving. There's nothing wrong, in my opinion, with f2p or a cash shop. However, there are many ways to do a cash shop properly or poorly. There are also good ways to integrate subscribers into a f2p game (see Rift for a good example of how that has been handled in a very good manner).
Personally, I prefer f2p for games. IT lets me try them and decide if I like them enough to spend money on them. If I had to spend $60 on a game up front (even if later I didn't have to pay for a subscription) I would feel ripped off the majority of the time. F2P with a cash shop lets you play the game and determine when and where you spend your money. It actually ends up making more money for the company than the subscription model while allowing more people to play than might otherwise.
Yea, hard to say. You get your vocal minority on the forums, but they sometimes (not always) speak for the larger population. Change may depend upon how entrenched certain individuals are with the p2w cash shop idea.

what you said this morning got me to thinking Amon. No Dev would do something this stupid unless the were testing the store which was just put in. Set the LP regen rate slow so people would be buying those pots left and right cause this is free money in beta. They gave each of us what we will get in release so play with. They might get something else out of those numbers, you would know more than me about that

What you want beta for is to test balancing or player acceptance/rejection, that sort of thing. So, this may be a test to see if players like or hate the cash-shop with p2w. Hard to say without having some insider info (which I don't).

yeah your idea makes sense but the extreme silence fro the devs on this issue makes me thing there are some serious discussions going on between XL in Korea and Trion about more than few flaws in this business model. Several good game out there with good workable cash shops that generate a decent profit to model theirs on. All this one does is shit on top of the best RPG oriented gameplay and overall design I have seen since SWG

had to eat a little crow on this today. The LP potions sell for 300 credits in the cash store. 20 dollars buys 2500 credits so 100 credits = 1.25 USD. 200 would be 3.75 USD. It is cheaper to get a second patron account than buy these things. Even if left offline the account would earn 1440 LP every day. Harvest it by mining stone every 3 days and at the end of the month and you just had 43 of those potions at a cost of $15.00. 1440 x 30 = 43,200 LP. 43 pots would be 161.00. Only thing pots would be good for is for a quick grind or some fast cash

I don't care whether you buy the pots or not.
The idea that your game time is entirely limited by a pool that could run out - and therefore end your game time for a day or even an hour (seriously? It costs LP to open your inventory?). Is ridiculous outside of pay-for-content PHONE APPS.
Like Seriously? If you're low level and just starting out and you WANT to play the game for 12 hours straight you can't because you only have enough points to play for 3?
Why would you support in any way, shape, or form - that type of game mechanic? Much less with a monthly fee. So if I pay my fee I still have to build up points in order to play longer?
Its Farmtown... seriously - its like every "free" facebook game - that lets you have so many turns and then you either wait to refill your pool or you spend $$ to buy extra. Only at least Facebook doesn't give you a subscription option that... still makes you wait to refill your pool.
Rested Experience was a huge game changer (and very controversial) when WoW brought it to the table, and that was just getting you BONUS experience for NOT playing.
To play at ALL you have to refill your pool of points? Seriously? Even with a monthly fee?
Not one red cent would I support such a game mechanic. Hell I might give money to make it stop instead.

LOL Frith, no need to pop a vein. Labor is just a mini game inside the game. I am running 4 8x8 farms, and a 16 x 16, play 6 - 10 hours a day and never run out of labor. The labor pots are a Darwin test for gamers. Just my opinion here I can see big guilds using them for castle building surges, galleon building etc. Other end of the spectrum is some who are for the lack of a better word "stupid people" with fat wallets trying to buy smarts. My main right now is sitting at 3750 LP. I started this morning with 5 K which is bit lower than normal because I had to craft tax certificates which were due today. I have made more gold in this characters first six days than I have with all my Alpha characters combined and that is with the lower labor point regen rate on Beta. I could have done better if I had did my property management right gold wise, there a learning curve to AA
Anyway I don't think you would enjoy the game much even without the labor issue. AA is more of a RPG, than a WoW style MMO. The questing is meh, Dungeons are short and the drops in them are no where as good as crafted items. I think there is a raid but again the drops are nothing special gear wise. Endgame is crafting and realm vs realm PvP like DAoC not raids so that alone will turn off most of the WoW crowd. Tons of things to do ingame though and lots of really great features. CAll it a korean grinder or whatever but I just love it. I have not enjoyed a game this much since DAoC or SWG. It is a fun game with lots of ways to play it, I can live with a few warts for a MMORPG that is not paint by the numbers

I don't consider "Korean Grinder" = RPG.
I know I wouldn't enjoy this game, at all - but I'm glad to hear the Labor Resources mini-game is just that, for certain things, not all things.
I just don't care about PVP at all. *shrugs*
