So, woo-hoo, just got off the phone with the local hoagie shop to set up a lunch order.
You know, I really really loathe using the phone these days for anything. I remember back in the 90s when most phones were an actual handset that stretched from ear to mouth, and anytime you made a phonecall, you could actually hear the person on the other side loud and clear.
Fast-Forward to today, and...
1). Many Cellphones are little squares that barely fit over the ears; the mics are so far away from your mouth that if the user doesn't use the phone correctly, you can't hear what they're saying very well. If you are the user and you don't have it positioned over your ear just right, you can't hear the person on the other side, and if you are both using one wrong... well forget it.
2). It is difficult to find a non-cordless phone that isn't incredibly cheaply made. We tried to get one for the house in an event of a power outage, but the only one we could find at the local walmart was a $10 cheapie. We hooked it up and... if you don't hold the handset JUST right, it crackles so loud you can't hear anything (apparently there's a loose wire inside the handset) anyways. Cordless phones are starting to go the way of cellphones -- they are getting smaller and smaller, and they almost always have poor batteries (they want you to buy $10 batteries for a phone that cost you $15) that wear out within a year of good solid use.
3). A lot of phones just aren't loud enough. I'm a person who has sensitive hearing (of the good kind) and even I think that many places I call (just like the hoagie shop I just called) ... the sound comes through like the people are standing 20 feet away from the phone; you can barely hear them on the other end. I've told this shop about that but that was a month ago and they didn't do anything about it so.. *shrugs* About the only thing I can do is tell them my order and pray they can hear me better than I can hear them.
So yeah...
Whatever happened to good phones these days? You'd think with all of the technology we have, we wouldn't be going backwards in something like the quality of your average phonecall, when phones have been around for a very long time.
About the only thing good I can admit about phones, is that more of them are putting volume controls on the phones, though only a few of them are on the SIDE of the phone (the one we have, the volume button is on the keypad... how am I to use that while in a phone conversation, again?).
