Ok so, I posted this rant that I think basically and logically sums up the entire 6 month problem at this point.. over in the Secret World Forums as part of well.. a whole buncha rants and threads that have been happening there since this entire shambles of a World Event started in September, 2012. "The Whispering Tide Event" leading up to Toyko was expected to be grindy, we all knew it was just a killing-time event until Toyko was ready to launch, late as we knew, because up until that time the devs had been really good about communicating this shit with us. So we knew this was going to be grindy but... still...
Anyway we started out all hopeful. And I gotta tell you - even my wizened and hardened ranter's heart had a glimmer of hope for this game and these Devs. For the entire original experience up until this Fucking Event, things were awesome. The story, the game, the quests, everytrhing cool and fun and easily doable if you were a solo casual player but also offered true end-game grind-raiding and max stats for people to go after (along with really great achievement and lore hunting) if they were really into min/maxing in a game. PVP was never strong and that was its biggest flaw.
But then oh I don't even know what happened... everything's changed.
And now I think we've got a playerbase wanting to shoot themselves in the face and hoping Toyko shows us that this isn't some split-personality trick from the Dev's. That THIS is not the future of the game. *is still crossing fingers as Toykos is suppose to be an expansion to continue the main storyline and be a quest hub like the other cities and NOT THIS EVENT*
I'm going to let the rant speak for itself at this point. I think most of you even if you don't know the details of the terms of what I'm throwing around (Like Craft Mat Box, and Flappy, Augments and Tendril Timers) have been in MMORPGs enough to know the archeotype. I'll just give you the facts of the phases and let the rant tell you what ACTUALLY happened... *chuckles* (craft grind, raid boss, enchants, and artificial gates to content)
Phase 1 - EMAIL RECEIVED: ITS STARTED! Turning in of huge amounts of highest tier crafting mats, designed to be a craft mat dump, to setup for the release of THE AUGMENTS. The great new system for maxers to get more max in prep for the max max Toyko raid. That it requires almost a year of grinding in order to truly max the max in these little generated instances of repeated content was no big deal because the end-game-raiders had been begging for something to grind. This was given to them. And because Augments can only be made by using a shitton of HIGHEST TIER CRAFT MAT, Funcom wanted this phase to get the raiders dumping their mats.
As you turned in craft mats, boxes filled. Much like WoW's craft=turn ins for AQ launch event in vanilla WoW. The boxes filled up based on the rate the community dumped mats into them. As you can imagine, a game a year old with a large raid base that had been raiding with nothing else to do or spend their shit on had a crapton of mats to dump.
This phase lasted 3 days. If you missed it, you missed HALF of reward currency (two types - this will be Type A, the shity-reward-rated one) to get the Vendor Loot (the only way to get rewards from the event besides random green drops and some coin)
And then the players found out that there's a whole list of Acheivements associated with the Event (as expected) But unfortunately, the Master Acheivement for doing all of it doesn't list whether or not the missed Phase 1 counted as part of it for the Completionist or not. And that was never answered in all the six months since, until today.
Phase 2 - A solo and group dungeon farming instance. Took about 15 minutes solo or grouped. Gave the other half, Type B, of the currency at a semi-decent rate for the Vendor Rewards for the Whole Event. This was much better than phase 1 everyone said. You could farm a dungeon as much or as little as you liked. Anyone could do it anytime. No biggy. Some complaints that it took x1000 times more of Type A Currency than Type B currency for the rewards, but okey, we knew this was like a 6 phase event and there were 4 craft schools that needed to be dumped. There would be more phases like phase 1 to get that currency. Some grumbles, but okey we can do this.
Halloween Hit. Awesome event. Another couple of mega-world-server bosseses and some grumbles because these are not only boring but the game clearly isn't designed to handle the load. Think Horizons back when we had our first anchors and town attacks and world events. Mega-world-bosses drop your lag to the slideshow for the 20 minutes of the fight... wee. But still, Hallow AND the Phase 2 II dungeons, alright this is cool!
Ok, Phase 2...going a little long..been over a month of farming the same dungeon ad infinetium 24/7 and these tendrils (Counters when dropped to 0 start the next phase) drop... pretty slow.. realy.. But.. OK onto..
Phase 3 - ok just like phase one but with a 2nd resource! Okey! Turnin rate sucks ass only getting 7 tokens for your expensive and valuable mat and the cheapest vendor item needs 250 of these things but whatever we can GRIND! Phase three also lasted longer htan phase one and with more warning with tendril countdowns and such, most people got enough warning to get in who wanted to and I want to say it lasted a week ish. OH YEA THAT"S RIGHT - and they UPPED the cost by 1000 units (think like upping the cost of a WoW pet by 50,000gold equivalent) of Type A Currency in order to get. The best Item of the Event went up from Phase 2/3 costs 1000 units of the craft-mat turn in item. All those people who got it cheaper - got it cheaper! And the rest of you guys, well grind more and suck it!
Phase 4! ANOTHER DUNGEON! Only.. group.. only. Ok. Same idea - run through some filth mobs and kill three bosses easy. Done in 15 minutes. Normal Mode and for the grindy-epic people Nightmare Mode. Okey. But.. just a group. No Solo run option this time. Ok... hrm.. alright.. groups start running. Oh whew, no more items on the vendor increased in price, hey that's something apparently!
And its December! Phase 4 has been aroun dfor a few weeks but now its Xmas!! New Christmas mega-boss! Mayan Event from last Year minus quests but with all more mega-bosses with pets! OKEY! LOTS OF MEGA BOSSES HERE BUT OK! And more grinding of DUngeon Four... and more grinding of Dungeon four...
And Janaury... and more grinding of dungeon four. And no word from the devs about any questions about phases left. Time till Toyko. Did that firstr phase count for those acheivements? Damn these tendrils are dying really eff'in slow... We thought after the Holidays were over players would return but.. no wait.. players are really bored of this content... its the same dungeon for two months... group only... tendrils drop too slow. Funcom you really need to up the tendril death rate, this is painfully punishing to run and kill at this rate... Its going to take another 8 months at this rate to get to TOyko... WTF FUNCOM HELP! QUESTIONS! WE HAS THEM! Can you at least adjust tendrils so we can get to the next phase from this effin 3 month dungeon group instance!!!
NEW YEARS NEWSLETTER! (mid/January) NEXT RAID IS a 40 man KILL FLAPPY!! WOO!! CELEBRATE EVERYONE! (oh and it will only be available for 30 minutes every three hours, and in that time if you're lucky you'll be able to run it twice as now that its live we've figured that out...) WE ARE SKIPPING TO THE END PHASE! KILL FLAPPY ENOUGH AND TOYKO WILL BE HERE!
*some mild celebration* *some complining about ?wtf more megabosses?* *others complaining 'can't play these things its a slide show and now we have to grind it for months wtf?* and others asking "Hey are we getting another craft mat turnin cuz I still need Type A currency to get anything at all and if Raid Doesn't drop Type A currency we get nothing at all for 5 months of this bullshit.."
*more crickets from the devs*
Suddenly, the tendrils bug and stop dropping health with like 3 months left. Flappy Raid is on testlive over a weekend. In the next week the entire tendril dungeon is DONE SOMEHOW BAM TENDRILS DOWN and CRAFT MAT BOX ARRIVES! No announcements, no warning, no nothing. The community pounced on the craft boxes - FLAPPY WAS HERE!! THE END IS IN SIGHT!! BRING ON THE FLAPPY!
Phase 5 over in 3 days. Over a weekend. Those craft mats you'd been hoarding to get that Type A Currency so you can get those rewsards - too bad suck it if you missed it - that's it. Or is it? Well we don't know cuz you know, dev's aren't talking...
Phase Six - Flappy IS HERE! It drops both Type A and Type B in semi-decent amounts to possibly catch people up who missed other times! YEA! But... its 40 man raid only! And you still can only run it for that 30 minute window every three hours! Adinfinitum until Toyko is released! THAT"S IT!
And thus.. in the 15th thread I posted in - I summed it all up thusly in response to the ELITEST OF THE ELITESELITES population who keep trying to tell the rest of us to suck it up and "too bad so sad if you didn't play enough to get anything..."
In this thread, its the completionist and the people who really did devote hours upon hours to this event, these forums, and this company - are simply wanting to be able to get the Main Reward Of the Entire Acheivement Line, even if they missed one of the 2/3 day craft mat turn in phases. Because as it went live, yes those phases counted, and no matter what else you did, you now not only don't get the achievement but you also don't get this UNIQUE AWESOME HELMET ITEM that we just announced is tied to the achievement the day it went live with the Flappy Raid, to the outfit you can't get anywhere else in game, but what these same people have grinded TWO TYPES of Currenct to get EVERY OTHER ITEM of the outfit that was on the EVENT VENDORS... "Sorry, no, you don't get your hat..."
I return with this:
This opposite player I quoted said:
SO I said:
That isn't true at all.
The last portal phase lasted months not because more or less players played it, the thing was finished and closed down REALLY FAST after a bug.. something that supposedly we were hacking away at for months with MAYBE 1 HP a dungeon run, that some of us were following DAILY, saw that by following the rules that "the entire event has been up to the players.." We had mmm... at least a few more months of grinding out that dungeon based on the current rules (that were never named as bugged or told anything other than what we the players were having to theorize and run with ourselves...).. before having to turn in any mats at all.
If it was up to the players.
Buut no, apparently there was a bug or something something... and it stopped dropping HP at all for a copule of days and then BAM within the space of less than a week, seriously, between the "Hey the tendril health isn't dropping anymore at all - is this thing bugged??" (During the testing phase of flappy) and then the bug is fixed and BAM! all the remaining tendrils died and BAM CRAFT MAT PHASE!
I"ve read these forums daily since launch. There was no way that was predicted by anyone. That once testlive was over BAM HERE"S FLAPPY! IN fact there have been hundreds (literally) of pages of people here demanding that no actually IT IS PLAYER BASED and so that FUncom is going to sit on Toyko for a year if people didn't start farming it or if they didn't increase the tendril death rate.
But no, in between the course of a few days, the progress it took 4 months to get to based on the "player made speed", was completed and BAM the craft mat phase started. Do you really think that was because suddenly millions of players logged in and finished the next 10K runs that were left?
No. It was because the Flappy Raid was Ready and the Devs knew people were sick of running the tendril dungeon. It wasn't because players sped up the progress and started a craft mat phase in a predictable manner.
And the devs never posted, in that hella-long-feedback- tendril-health monitoring thread - to even say "Hey we've fixed this bug so trust us guys, you're going to knock this out in a few days if you just push yourselves!!" They just posted at the end, "Oh bug - fixed!" and "BAM! FLAPPY!"
AND THEN - on top of that:
This happened twice in this achievement. The very first phase was over within a few days, barely announced and over with while people were still reading emails going "Wait what we're on phase two? Its been a weekend!" The forums were FILLED with people who were upset because they'd missed an achievement already because they didn't get in in the first 48 hours to put in their craft mats. That please funcom don't make that first phase part of the achievement!
Or at least learn from your mistake! Don't do it again!
And... well. Apparently no, they either didn't learn, weren't listening, or don't give a shit.
It happened again. Instead of you know, sending out an email just as easily as they sent out the newsletter to everyone going. "Hey guys! The tendrils are gone! Here's your craft box but work quick - get in before your community fills it up!"
Or Even making any announcement at any point since the event's launch to go, "OK guys it wouldn't be fair so the craft-mat achievements do or don't count." or "Ok guys we hear you loud and clear and we're just going to throw out this first phase." Or well anything feedback wise at all... They never answered those questions and they still don't... they just do it ...again.
ANND ON TOP OF THAT:
The New Year Newsletter came out and said "The next phase will be a flappy raid!". It NEVER ONCE SAID "But we're not skipping any of the other phases you knew wer ealready coming!" It said "THE NEXT PHASE IS FLAPPY!"
And myself, and others, have posted for weeks ASKING "HEY IS THERE GOING TO BE A MAT PHASE?!" And some discussion back and forth as to whether there should or shouldn't be among the players.
STill no dev comment to say YES THERE WILL BE SO LOOK OUT FOR IT! Because yes, then people would have been paying more attention... though how I could have paid more attention than reading every day and watching the preditable patterns I'm not sure but YES!
Discussion, questions, not a single dev response to answer.
Until we got one. And then... it was over.
Thankfully, this one time, I was able to use it because I was at work reading forums when the discovery was made and logged in over the weekend to turn in my waters. I was able to finally get enough of anything in this worst-event-ever-orchestrated to actually get a single piece of clothing to remember this fiasco by. I didn't give two shits about the Acheivement because I'd missed everything else. I just wanted a craft box so I could get a single reward from this whole mess. Becvause I knew that once again, Funcom was screwing me over, putting Flappy on a 3 hour timer and me not having a whole lot of time to game here.
I was counting on that craft mat box so I could get a reward and was thankful I caught the window.
And I think the whole thing was a piece of crock... and the fact that this achievement NOW rewards a helmet for that entire clothing outfit, and that this achievement won't count for so many people who did devote a crapton of hours to helping this whole event... because they missed a single weekend..
ANd now to learn they were double-screwed over. Not just out of the Acheivement for their Completionists hearts (Bless them, be glad they are here, Funcom needs their money too), but now out of the Helmet Clothing option that completes the bee outfit that no one else can supposedly ever get again and will mark all of us as "People who were here for the Toyko Opening.."..
I am sorry guys. Really. It really sucks. And it really sucks that not one of any of these questions were ever addressed or announced by the devs to give the players begging for information something they could know so they could plan around. We've begged for this information and it was never given.
The warning in the newsletter didn't warn anything. If you believe that's enough of a warning for people "to just have known to start watching" after THAT pattern... well I got a bridge in San Francisco to sell you.
Its some pixels in a video game. Tell me - what does it hurt you for these other players to have their reward too?
Because it hurts a whole bunch the way it is now.
Yea its long. TLDR - I think I have a legitmate point here.
This was all just very shitty.
And by golly, someone besides the people loyally playing this game needs to know.
ANd because I'm pissed off to high heaven right now for all sorts of reasons and I wanted my lovely little logically stroll down WTF FUNCOM DEV LANE to be heard outside those forums...
I know you guys are challenged when it comes to reading walls of text but maybe if you break it up into chapters you'll give me some feedback on how bullshit this is. =D
Or maybe its the day off from work is getting to me.
Anyway we started out all hopeful. And I gotta tell you - even my wizened and hardened ranter's heart had a glimmer of hope for this game and these Devs. For the entire original experience up until this Fucking Event, things were awesome.
