www.motherjones.com/environment/2013/01/lead-crime-link-gasolineA very persuasive article on the link between the rise in environmental lead and violent crime. Not a great surprise, given what we know about lead and it's effect on the Roman Empire; but now with statistical links that have been tested. No other explanation for the rise and fall of violent crime in the latter part of the last century stands up so well to the statistical analysis.

What amazes me is that I was able to look at that molecular formula and deduce it was tetraethyl lead before they mentioned what it was. High school/college chemistry courses still sticking with me after all these years. The results of that analysis don't surprise me any, really. Pollution of various kinds does have a significant effect on the health (and mental health) of a population exposed to it for years. Kinda makes me wonder what other specific and ubiquitous pollutants out there have had a hand in harming society as a whole.

Thanks Kula. Thats good stuff. Unfortunately most of the articles linked do not appear to have been published in peer-reviewed journals so that in my opinion makes them relatively worthless. The last one appears to be far more valid, published at Tulane University, but I haven't been able to find the name of a journal it was published in yet.
Still, the conclusions are interesting.
