One thing I have heard about on the beta boards is the Rifts keep growing if not completed. On some of the lower Pop Servers the rifts had grown enough to start taking over Quest Hubs and kill off NPCs and such. So it sounds like they have made Horizons original idea of a dynamic war a reality. I am not sure how strong a rift will grow if it is left alone. I.E. Does the number of kills increase. But I heard they "Armies" will come out of the rifts and move on areas. I did see a message from time to time of the craft hub I was in being attacked by a mob type. I never saw it or any rift activity so I am not sure what that was about.
One thing that did crack me up was I killed a rabbit once and I got a collection artifact of Rabbits Tear. In it discription it said, "Are you happy with your self now?" I had to laugh, but under that collection you also have to collect a cat's, Rats, Squirrel, snake and couple other tears.

The only problem I see with this game is, people soon get sick and tired and burned out on being forced to defeat dynamic content. How many of you took part in events in your parent games where there would be attacks from whatever the event spotlighted, but after awhile, it got old and you stopped bothering?
Who knows, maybe if a world is built around the idea, people won't get bored but I somehow doubt it.

I can see that, I know I was at just about every Horizon event if I could log in and was of a level to help. I think the Rifts are suppose to be the WoW Raid dungeon or the equivalent. I assume if they are not getting as much play as they think they should they can also turn down the spawn frequency.

It's possible that players who want a theme park game will get annoyed at that yeah. Seems to me that Rifts is trying to make more of a virtual world. More like eve but with the dynamic stuff being npcs rather than players (except on pvp servers of course, them it's both).

yea, I can see how I'd get bored if I was having to kill the 3rd rift this week at ZYZ quest hub. Certainlky even more so if I was behind the leveling curve, or new to the game, and coldn't find any help to help me take out said Rift areas. I can see that getting old FAST.
I would imagine they'll have something in place that will have either NPCs beating the Rift back or having the Rift despawn after X amount of time. Else they run the risk of that level 6 zone rift taking over the entire continent cuz there aren't enough players in the area to beat it back.
"Ahhh our level 80 content was wiped out by a zone that started in level 6 three weeks ago!! Its too big to kill!"
So I'm sure they'll have in some type of counter-control to adjust for wildly variation player situations. The first time a rift "broke free" and starts wiping out the 10 people in a low level zone who can't destroy it alone and can't get any further, resulting in well founded QQ on the forums - they'll do SOMETHING to control for it if not before heh.

Heh well it seems more to me that's it's more the alpha players bug hunting. Beta seems to be more about stress testing and getting general feedback from a much wider audience.

Thats what I felt as well. Most of the beta "testers" where just playing the game. The game seems fairly ploished and only really ran into 1 or 2 major things and they fixed those that day. I am not sure how far out it is, but I think this was more of "Come look at our game get ready to pre-order it." LOL.

Regarding the invasions and death of quest givers. I think I heard on a pod sat somewhere that after a bit a npc faction war chief will spawn with some soldiers. These will assist a player in beating back an invasion if population is low at the time. Saw something like that in the new redridge area. There is a quest line where the d-team group with you and help you fight the elite mobs that you need to solo.

In the starter zone the last quest is like that. The big bad of the game spawns and a bunch of mobs spawn to hold him off. I am sure that is more a scripted event then NPC add-ons spawning to help but I would think it would be along the same lines.

I received an invite to Beta event 2. So I will let you know what I think of the other side of the coin. Lets see how the holy rollers side of things stack against the evil technocracy. ;D

massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/22/rift-beta-massivelys-first-impressions/Another interesting review by Massively. This game has "potential" (I mean that in the good way lol), I think. Reading about how the rift's elementals may be fighting against each other helped me understand how they could keep these things under control when/if the population in a certain area is low. Still have some concerns clearly, and I personally will wait and see how that population issue REALLY effects rift spawns and rift-strength and such as that. But it certainly looks like its heading in the right direction. Just have to see how things go.

Saw that Scott Hartsman is involved in this one. He was a big player in EQ2 and was involved in development of early expansions of EQ1. Really good guy, good head on his shoulders.

But yea, NDA dropped thats' why I found the article and posted it up.
And yes, always a sign for better when NDA drops before Launch!
