This morning, empty of mind, but full of coffee and brio, I thought it would be nice to have a place to deposit my dead mice. Stuff that doesn't seem to fit an existing thread or justify a new thread, but that I hope may interest someone or two. Obviously it won't have the range of, say, Yuusuke's site, and is far less ambitious. But it will allow me to divest myself of the shambling, undead once mini-rodents, that are taking over my mind... must empty mind... And the first of the moldy mice! Economics; voices.washingtonpost.com/ezra-klein/2010/05/galbraith_the_danger_posed_by.htmlWarning: A lotta my litter is liberal.

Thanks, I think it's fixed now. The one time I'm in a hurry and don't check...

Good idea.
Klein always struck me as something the cat drug in... er, eh hem... Ah, the cheap bond market in a time of huge deficits conundrum. 'Tis a wonder indeed, until one sees that not all deficits are equal, which the bond market seems to understand and prices accordingly. Mysteries do sometimes happen though, and something like the thinking in this interview might explain parts of those.
Looking forward to more mousies... for no other reason than if they make you (K) think, they'll probably make me think.
Thank you, Kulamata

A short discussion of the differences between (the?) three major strands of contemporary conservatism. I'd always distinguished between the Northeastern strand, but did not as clearly differentiate between the Southern and Western strains. Certainly not a major article or insight, but it seemed useful. www.slate.com/id/2255433/

I'd agree, Kula--interesting but not insightful as the division between eastern, western and southern conservatives (indeed, liberals for that matter) has been well documented since at least the LBJ era. In my view, those differences all stem from vastly different regional histories.
I would strongly disagree, however, with the author's assertion that the GoP is "dominated" by Cheney, Palin and Beck. To the contrary, from all I've read and seen, they are outlyers and at best tolerated by the party. They certainly do not have the stroke or influence that, say, Jerry Falwell had.
Unfortunately for the party, if I had to point a finger at the most influential and dominant conservative these days I would direct it at Rush Limbaugh . . . .

Limbaugh? Really - over Beck and O'Reiley?
I had thought LImbaugh had scraped himself into a lesser-corner with his fall from grace.
Course I'm waiting for Beck's child porn or something to be discovered...heh.

Neither Beck nor O'Reilly ever had the head of the RNC apologize to them as Steele did to Limbaugh last year. That is stroke and a half!
Contrariwise, Beck is now apologizing for making an awful "joke" about the President's child on his show . . . .

The article also doesn't seem to include the ummm vigorously opinionated school of anti-tax/social security/medicare conservatives of the Grover Norquist sort. I don't think they fit any of the geographical pigeonholes.

Good catch, Kula--I'd forgotten about Norquist and his fellow travellers. Now you've got me pondering what pigeon (or rabbit) hole they would fit into. Not an easy decision to be sure.

I've decided that it just means that the classification scheme is too limited to reflect messy ol' reality. And now, ta-da, today's shiny bauble that caught my eye: www.sciencedaily.com/videos/2005/0505-sharkinspired_boat_surface.htmBottom paint necessitates haul-outs, usually annually, and removing the old paint which requires respirators. Marinas are filled with boats slowly leaching toxic metals into the water... If this is economical, it will be one of those unexciting advances that cumulatively make a big difference.
