Oh I loved Watership Down, I've got it on DVD Yay! Glad to know someone knows of it. You're probably like the first person I've asked who actually knew what it was. I've got both books and I've really been meaning to buy the DVD; hadn't gotten around to it yet.

HA I grew up on Watership Down... I read the book probably four or five times by 4th grade. And yup I do own that DVD. I also read Richard Adams' other works - Traveller and Plague Dogs.. tried reading Shardik but that didn't work (granted I tried reading it when I was 12...). And I have a first edition Watership Down hardcover as well So yes... others have heard of it and worship it for the wonderful story it is. Don't ask me why at 6 and 7 years old I loved that movie when other children would run screaming from the bloody rabbit killings... *chuckles* Course that was also me growing up on the Animated The Hobbit (still the best yes...), The Last Unicorn, Labryinth, and Legend. Those were my "continusoualy playing movies" as a child lol. And Phar - if you don't pay to watch any MIFFAAAWTF movies and you don't even pirate them.. then what you're saying is you just don't watch movies at all? I mean I get the whole "I hate what they've done and so I won't support it." But as you said we're "stuck" with no other options unless we just give it up entirely. And uhh... well.. no.. I rather like being able to have music and movies in my life. DO I wish things worked differently? Yup. Do I pirate? Extensively. I pay for what I feel deserves my money. I've bought 2 music cd's (entirely) in the last 3 years - both of those being the new Mumford and Sons albums, oh..and whatever the last Weird Al Release was. Bought that one. Otherwise I don't buy albums, but I will pay a dollar and support individual SONGS I like... fi I want more than one... yea.. I don't buy those. Because no, there are no other options. The only way I can vote is yes, with my wallet.. so yes... pirating means they still don't get money. If I don't think something is worth what they are charging, I ain't gonna pay it. But you make it sound like "Well even not paying it you're not changing the system." Well WTF how ELSE can we change the system? I'm not just going to give up music in my life. Or movies.

@frith:
I've always wondered, and now I simply must ask, since you've revealed that you've actually read Watership Down....
Is your name inspired by Frith-rah?
The first time I saw your name over on Horizons Forums and in-game way back when, the very first thing I thought was "Watership Down...? Nah, surely not..."

Actually its not, that was just an amazing coincidence I didn't even realize until someone else pointed it out =D It also happens to be words from a Draconian language in the Rhapsody book series, that particular phrase means, "Fire bringer, Fire starter"... her last name (Bridge-Sol) then means "Cloud Chaser, Cloud Caller" So..have to ask the writer of the Rhapsody Series if she was aware that her term was also the name of the SUn god in Watership Down... =D (But her colors, they are directly from Smaug... in the Animated Hobbit... she's all Smaugy baby...

And Phar - if you don't pay to watch any MIFFAAAWTF movies and you don't even pirate them.. then what you're saying is you just don't watch movies at all? Of course I watch movies. Mostly amateur and independent filmography. Documentaries, etc. I also watch the ones I have bought in the past, and I occasionally see others when I am with friends and they want to watch a movie at home that they bought. Once in a blue moon, I have gone to the movies when someone else was paying, because it was a social outing; the movie was incidental. No one said there weren't other options. The entertainment industry is filled with far more independent and unaffiliated artists whom I wholeheartedly enjoy supporting -- directly. Yep. Me too. I don't feel the MPAA/RIAA deserves ANY of my money. Period. Ever. Do I pirate? No. I don't have to. I have found a wealth of other artists' work all over the place that I am more than happy to enjoy. I am beyond sick and tired of "blockbuster formula" media. I don't watch TV. I seek out and choose my entertainment wisely. There ARE other options. Dear god, Frith, there's a HUGE fuckin' world of talent out there that isn't tainted by mass corporatism and pop culture. Well, that is, unless mass corporatism and pop culture is what you're into, then well, no, probably not. <.< Whether you actually pay money for it or not is immaterial to the participation in it. When you participate, you're sharing it, spreading it, supporting its popularity, which brings others into the system. Besides, you obviously DO pay for a good bit of it, so you can't even use "I only pirate" as a defense for participation. Simply put, I refuse to participate in the system. I recognize it for what it is, and since I can't nuke it out of existence, I do the only remaining thing I can -- ignore it and try to get other people to do the same.

Ahh I got you now.. *nods*
And yes, for movies, I do pay for a good bit of it. Because I have no problems supporting the status quo of movies - I want theater houses to be around showing what they show because I DO LIKE what they show. Obviously, or I wouldn't pay 30-45 bucks to take me, the hubby, and the bff to movies every other Sunday for the past...2 decades almost... And its rarely a Sunday there isn't something out that we all want to see (and that also means throwing out all Rom Coms and Comedies as we never go to the theater to see those, if we see them at all)...
...so yes, to a certain extent, I am buying what they are selling and I have no problems with that. I love it. I love the Theater. Both Movie and Stage =D. I want the full 3d surround sound immersion... I want to be OVERWHELMED by my movie experience.
BUT I do also watch Documentaries (bunches of them), pay to try and watch indie films (when I hear about them and they seem interesting to me..hearing about the good ones is a tough one).
I also pay for full digital cable and record about 20-25 shows a year (not only Primetime but also documentary series and other one-offs and off-season things...)..
Clearly...visual arts wise - I'm buying what they are selling.
Music, music I've rarely paid for since the internet was made public and it was CompuServe and AOL. Even when I was 6 I never understood the point of paying 12 bucks for a Cassette (when I was 6...lol) full of songs I didn't want for the one or two I did want. So very young for xmas my parents bought me a double-tape stereo and I sat for hours on the radio to catch the single songs I wanted instead of paying for bunches of songs I didn't want...=D
I pay for the songs I feel are worth supporting, and the very few albums/artists who's albums (as a whole) I generally enjoy. That would be local artists if I found any I liked, as well as "top 40 pop crap" I like...
My issue is I'm very particular about what I DO like (more so in music than in movies but even in movies) and I have low tolerances for certain types of issues that are more present in non-mainstream-media (music and movies) just due to personal preferences. For example, I hate live albums and "unplugged" stuff (for the most part). I also hate sitting in a coffee house and listening to some idiot caterwaul on his guitar... which limits my consumption of "Local" music so to speak.
I hate crawling slow indie films that have no point other than to try and be some hipster stupid narcisistic commentary on our corruption in consumerism (or some other such preachy bullshit...) which ends up feeding only their own Ego's. I also hate "art" films and most anything that tries to be what I would consider "consciously pretentious" and unfortunately it seems to me to be the vast majority of Indie films anyone ever tries to show me... I fall asleep or I'm rolling my eyes as someone's "Great insight" makes me want to punch a bitch.. (cuz it is neither great, original, nor all that insightful...)
I respect your refusal to participate. My tastes at this point for good or for bad, include the drivel Hollywood puts out... doesn't have to ONLY be that, but I only rarely find the non-main-stream stuff to fit my expectations and desires. *shrugs* I'm ok with that really.
But then I also don't buy DVDs, tv shows, movies, at this point because I never watch the ones I bought 10 years ago... I go to the theater and watch them once. And then that's all the cash they get from me 99.9% of the time (I don't buy the overpriced concession stuff..I go to a movie and I don't need popcorn or drinks...). Occasionally if something got missed in the theater, I'll get it on demand. If someone points me to a great Indie film, I'll pay for that on demand too or watch it on one of my indie-film-internet on tv stations if I can catch it... (I do have them bookmarked and I do check them out...)
When I'm able to afford the home theater system that would give me the immersion I can get in the movies...then we'll talk about no longer going to the theater =D.
And music, well for the artists who self-produce where I don't HAVE to go through iTunes (or whatever) to get their music I'd much rather directly go to their website and d/l their song(s) I want, pay them direct, and do it that way. Its just so few artists get to do that (or try to do that), but when I find those and I want their shit - I do look to pay them directly before giving the 1.00 to iTunes or whomever... if its the only *way* I can support them then yea...yea do gotta go through the corporate system...
But give up Weird Al? No wai! ;D
